Problem: Thermal Conductivity

We perform a thermal conductivity measurement (i.e., we establish a tex2html_wrap_inline6601 temperature gradient, and we measure the tex2html_wrap_inline6603 heat flow across the sample), but instead of the standard zero electrical current condition, we enforce zero electric field across the sample. We calculate tex2html_wrap_inline6605 from the measured heat flow.

(a) Calculate the difference tex2html_wrap_inline6607 in terms of the usual thermal conductivity ( tex2html_wrap_inline5823 ), conductivity ( tex2html_wrap_inline6611 ), and thermopower ( tex2html_wrap_inline6613 ).

(b) How big is tex2html_wrap_inline6615 at room temperature for a typical metal?
