Problem: Diatomic Chain

For a diatomic linear chain, the phonon dispersion relation tex2html_wrap_inline5857 has two branches, according to the + and - sign in the equation below:

  equation1552

There are two atoms in the unit cell with masses tex2html_wrap_inline5863 and tex2html_wrap_inline5865 , and the force constant of the nearest-neighbor interaction is given by f. In Figure 2.3 the frequency is plotted for various values of tex2html_wrap_inline5869 , with the effective mass, tex2html_wrap_inline5871 , kept constant.

Figure 2.3: Phonon dispersion relation for a diatomic chain for tex2html_wrap_inline5105 (solid line), tex2html_wrap_inline5107 and tex2html_wrap_inline5109 . The frequency scale is set by tex2html_wrap_inline5111 .

  (a) Calculate the sound velocity.

(b) Show that for tex2html_wrap_inline5881 , the result is equivalent to the dispersion curve of the single-atom chain.
