Problem: Density of States for Hybridized Bands

If electrons can jump between a broad band [described by tex2html_wrap_inline6181 ] and a narrow energy level at tex2html_wrap_inline5145 , then the band structure exhibits signs of hybridization: A mixing of electronic states when the tex2html_wrap_inline6181 and tex2html_wrap_inline5145 energies are close (see Problem 5.2). In a simple model, the hybridized energy levels can be calculated as

equation1918

Assume that the broad band has tex2html_wrap_inline6191 , a constant DOS over a bandwidth tex2html_wrap_inline6193 , and tex2html_wrap_inline6195 for tex2html_wrap_inline6197 or tex2html_wrap_inline6199 . For the narrow band the DOS peaks sharply at energy tex2html_wrap_inline5145 , but the total number of states is the same as in the broad band; tex2html_wrap_inline6203 . Calculate the DOS for the hybridized band.
