Determine the frequencies of the longitudinal and the transverse waves in a polar insulator or semiconductor, where the tex2html_wrap_inline6295 limit of the oscillator model, Eq. gif, describes the dielectric function. Discuss the wavenumber (k) dependence of the transverse waves. Show that the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relation,

  equation2001

holds, where tex2html_wrap_inline6299 is the real part of the dielectric function, tex2html_wrap_inline6301 is the longitudinal wave frequency, and tex2html_wrap_inline6303 is the transverse wave frequency at tex2html_wrap_inline6305 .
