Travel Information

The Yacht Club is on the eastern tip of Long Island. It is available by car, bus, train, limousine service and boat. The address is: 32 Star Island Rd, Montauk, NY 11954. Click here for a map. Driving directions from the Yacht Club's WEB page are here.

Arrival by air

For participants arriving by air, we recommend the two major airports, La Guardia (LGA) and J.F. Kennedy (JFK). Those flying in from the US or Canada should definitely look into the possibility of arriving to Long Island's McArthur airport (ISP, in the town of Islip). Delta, Southwest and other airlines provide service to Islip. We do not recommend Newark Airport, since the trip from there to Montauk is very long indeed.

Buses will be provided by the Conference to participants arriving Sunday and leaving Friday. The buses will go between Montauk, and the three airports (LGA, JFK and ISP). (There will be one bus leaving from New York City Sunday at 3:30PM. There will be no bus from the City, please take Hampton Jitney - see below) (From Newark Airport it is possible to take Olympia Bus to Penn Station in Manhattan. If you can be there in time, indicate in your registration form that you need pickup in NYC.)

Come back again later to this page for the pickup locations at the airports. If we get lucky, the new AirTran service at JFK will be partially operational by the time of the meeting, facilitating the pickup of participants arriving there. (No luck this time, see details here. ) If you will have a mobil phone that works in the US, please let us know the phone number on your registration form, so that we can reach you. We can not guarantee an immediate pickup upon your arrival. Compensating for this inconvenience is the pleasure of sharing the trip with other conference participants. And it will be free!

There are several limousine companies providing transportation to and from area airports. The less expensive ones offer a "shared van": they pickup and drop off several passengers, and it is very likely that the van will take detours before arriving at Montauk. A list of limo companies is available here. For example LI Airport Limo (631 234-0223) have rides from JFK for $98 and $118 (one and two passengers, respectively). Winston (631 924-1200) offers shared van at $134 (additional passenger pays $10). They also have a non-shared ride, for $201. Spartan Limo (631 928-5454), well known to many regular travelers in the area, runs slightly smaller cars with fewer passengers, resulting in a faster trip. At the time we asked Spartan offered a trip from JFK or LGA for about $110 for a single passenger, $120 for two and $130 for three. It pays to team up with other participants! However, the group rates are offered only if the pickup is from the same flight. (Note: The prices do not include the tip or service charge; expect to pay 15-20% more.)

Renting a car at the airport is another viable option. The car ride may easily take 2 1/2 to 3 hours, depending on the traffic. There is no charge for parking at the Yacht Club.

Travel by train

The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) provides service to Montauk. One-way fares from Penn Station are $10.25 (off peak) or 15.25 (peak time). There is bus service (see below) from the airports to LIRR's Jamaica station; the fares from Jamaica to Montauk are $8.75 (off peak) and $13.25 (peak). The timetable for the Montauk branch of the railroad is here. The total travel time from Manhattan is somewhat more than 3 hours, and on Sundays the last train leaves Penn Station at about 15 minutes before noon.

Travel by bus

Hampton Jitney runs bus service between Manhattan and Montauk. A one-way trip costs $25. They pick up passengers on the 86th street between Lexington Avenue and 3rd Avenue; on the corner of 69th & Lexington; 59th & Lexington; and on the 40th street between Lexington and 3rd Avenue, and at other places on the Island (see their WEB site for details). It is possible to get on the bus without reservation, and they accept credit card on the bus, but it is safer to call 631 283-4600 or 800 936-0440 (or fax 631 287-4759) for reservation and schedule, or log in to their reservations page. They can also take passengers arriving to JFK, LGA or ISP, but you must take a taxi to a designated pickup point. Traveling this way is going to be quite an adventure.

The New York Airport Service (212 875-8200 or 718 875-8200) has buses from JFK and LGA to Jamaica station, where one can board a train to Montauk. The trip costs $5. We do not recommend this option, except for people traveling with very light luggage, and with very high confidence in the published bus schedule.

Participants planning to arrive with a yacht or boat should contact the Yacht Club directly :-)
